Fire Rages Across the Costa del Sol

Fire Rages Across the Costa del Sol tonight as firefighters battle to save hundreds of homes from destruction

Hundreds of firefighters from all over the province of Malaga have been called in to quash what is looking like the biggest disaster to hit the area in living memory.

The fire which started in the Barranco Blanco area of Coin quickly spread to Alhaurín el Grande, Mijas and Marbella. This of course meant that theAP-7 (autopista del Mediterráneo) was cut of to traffic.

Infoca, responsible for fire prevention in Andalucia’s forests declared the blaze a level 2 incident and have asked for the assistance of the Unidad Militar de Emergencia (UME), basically the troops. This level of emergency is only called upon when an Autonomous area such as Malaga, calls for help from Central Government, declaring a state of emergency.

Marbella-Eye watched in horror as flames engulfed the mountain top community of La Mairena above Elviria. Cars by the hundred poured out of what, I can only guess is a community no more, as Police and Firefighters evacuated the area.

It seemed to me that nothing could stop this fire as the winds whipped up and the fire began to race down the mountainside. Police told Marbella-Eye that as far as they knew everyone was accounted for in La Mairena.

The fire spread so quickly that by the time I had got back on to the main road the fire was just outside Ojen, where I am reliably informed the 3,300 residents were also evacuated. Mijas, Calahonda and Altos de Marbella  have all been affected at the time of writing.

Driving home I noticed a few drops of rain on my visor but sadly not enough to help.
