Jive Spain Media Celebrity Dance Competition Swings into Marbella

It was a competition the likes of which has never been seen on the Costa del Sol before.

Two months ago four couples volunteered to represent some of the biggest media groups on the south coast for the first ever JiveSpain Media Celebrity Dance Competition.
Loosely based on the Strictly Come Dancing format, there was just one catch, the dancers had to be complete novices.
They were competing not just for the bragging rights and glory of first place, but also to win 600 euros and 400 euros, for first and second place respectively.
Not for them of course, but for a charity of their choice.Jive-(22)
All English speaking newspapers, magazines, radio stations and websites were asked to convince or arm-twist their employees to enter and the following took the bait: Ash Bolton and his partner Donna Fry from SUR in English, Giles Brown and Jaime Lee from Talk Radio Europe, Jan Dendauw and Mónika Böjti from Essential Magazine and Nick and Trish Bolton from Global Radio.Jive-(29)
Every week the couples had a two hour dance class guided by their dance teachers Colin Gausden and Natalie Davis.
Over ten weeks they took them step by step through dozens of moves including the octopus, several dramatic dips and the infamous pretzel explosion
Their goal was to learn enough moves to choreograph a routine that would last the length of a song on the competition night and if they were lucky, win them the competition.
By the time the final had arrived last Saturday December 15th, it was clear the dance classes had paid off for the couples.
More than 100 jive aficionados turned up to watch the nail biting final at TikiTano Beach Restaurant which also doubled as JiveSpain’s Christmas dinner do.Jive-(8)
Four “judges from hell” had been flown in especially from the UK to oversee the competition and pass comment after each couple’s performance.
Prior to the competition the dancers drew numbers out of a hat, to decide who would go in which order.
Nick and Trish were up first dancing to Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison, next up was Jan and Mónika dancing to Greece Lightning, then came Ash and Donna to the tune of Plan B’s She Said followed by Giles and Jamie Lee who danced to James Brown’s Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag.
The competition was fierce but in the end the votes were collected from the 100 or so guests and Ash and Donna took first place with Nick and Trish coming in second place.
The 600 euros won by Ash and Donna has been split between two charities: the Ciudad de Los Niños children’s home in Málaga and Bancosol Marbella.
The Global Radio runners up are to donate their winnings to Positively Pink.
